Welcome to the awkward world of kid birthday parties

Layla had her very first birthday party for a friend outside of her daycare setting. And things could not have gone more wrong.

Issue 1: The invitation literally fell out of Layla's backpack the night before said party. As I was on my way to take her to Mike so that they could go out while Evie and I went to physical therapy, so Mike was tasked with picking out a birthday present for a 4 year old with his under 3 daughter. Yikes.

Issue 2: Layla woke up with a runny nose and not feeling 100% THEN she would not nap at all.

Issue 3: We got a late start. Mike was out running some errands, and so was late coming home. Then I had to shower. THEN we went to the wrong place. So we were 45 minutes late to a party that was to last 90 minutes.

Issue 4: Forced mingling with complete strangers, where the only thing that you may have in common with them is that you have kids roughly the same age. And I'm not the best at small talk. I'm very grateful that Layla has friends, but I HATE that it creates this weird forced socializing. It's pretty much guaranteed that I'll say something to offend someone, while trying to be funny, and then have to spend the rest of the party avoiding eye contact.

Luckily for me, my kid has poor social skills right now and wants me by her. See ya, suckers. I'll be over there with my kid.

Oh, and the present? Mike and Layla picked out an adorable penguin Folkmanis puppet. Good daddy.

  1. ooh, I am so with you on issue #4. It makes my skin crawl to think about forced mingling and small talk makes me sweat.
